Restorative Practices For Schools
Our PD training is called Think BIG & be SMART 4R students™ It is a student-centered restorative practices-based approach to giving teachers the tools they need to develop positive relationships with students. At its core, are these fundamental beliefs:
- Relationships are critical to a positive and productive teacher/student dynamic.
- There is always an explanation for the behavior of young people. Part of an educator’s job is to discover why his or her students act in specific ways.
- Educators who are generous with their time, energy, and attention will inevitably have more positive relationships with students, leading to fewer classroom management issues and more positive participation.
- Restorative discipline is always a preferred approach when working with young people – and it works better in the long run than punitive punishment.
The role of Educators in Human Trafficking
The Role of Educators in Human Trafficking
Educators are the first line of defense to protect vulnerable children from trafficking. We all have an obligation to learn the signs of a victim or potential victim of human trafficking. The U.S. Department of Education released guidelines to help educators. These guidelines include noting risk factors that are likely to increase a child’s susceptibility to trafficking, as well as indicators to look for that might not be known to you. These include:
- A boyfriend or girlfriend who is much older
- Signs of physical abuse
- Anxious, fearful, or depressed behavior
- The desire not to leave school
- Coached or rehearsed replies to personal questions
- A sudden change in personal hygiene
- Clothes not appropriate for the season
- Promiscuity
- Tattoos with brands or names
